Elgin or "Hoedown" was certainly a "one of a kind" person. Lots of memories of your mom, dad or even Russel coming to pick up a dairy drop calf from my dad's farm to take back to your farm. Whenever I saw either of your parents out and about, they would always have a smile on their face and a friendly hello. Pete and I would often see Elgin out at various dances and it was always a pleasurer to watch him dance. He told Pete once, that he stays young by dancing. Treasure the memories you have of him, they will help you get through the days ahead.

Sending condolances to all of you on the loss of your Father. He certainly lived a wonderful and active life for many years. One of my first memories of your Mother and Dad, was being at a dance and them dancing all over the floor. What good dancers they were and I expect I might have been about 14 or 15 years old. My parents always danced, so had the opportunity to be a dances and see them. Treasure all those fun memories to help you with this lose. Never easy to lose our parents regardless of age.
Hugs Pat Tiffin (Lunn)

With great Sadness we received the news of the passing of Elgin ~ such a Joy-full person he was! My first memories of Elgin Cowan were as a wee lad listening to my Dad Archie and Mom Eileen, and Uncles Allan + Ross and Aunts Margaret + Jean talk about their friend "Hoedown" whom they spoke of with much affection and always smiling! "He was always there at the dances, dancing with all the girls, so much fun!"
As a young lad, I imagined this larger than life man scooping up the girls in his arms and whisking them away on the dancefloor ~ and when I finally had the opportunity to meet him, I found him NOT large, but certainly Full of Life! We spoke often when the chance occurred at the Chatham Legion, and he always had a kind word to say about my family members, especially my Uncle Allan. He will be missed much ~ Heartfelt Condolences to All Family and Friends ~ it was a Blessing to know you Elgin "Hoedown" Cowan

Dear Judy, Brenda, Nancy, Merril and families and friends
I remember the days of past when I would be at your farm for many days in the summers. We were glad when the chores were finished and we could play . I remember learning to drive the "bug"in the fields. Many fond memories of your mom and dad. I loved your dad's laugh and glimmer in his eyes.
May the peace that comes from the memories of your dad, grandpa and great grandpa and friend comfort each of you today, tomorrow and all the days ahead. Remember him often and enjoy the legacy he has left behind.
Sincerely, Bev and Margaret Jean Tunks

I remember when I was working for your mom and dad, you had me pitching manure out the side windows. They took me to the London race track that night to celebrate and I lost all my wages in a bet. One spring we were done work early so your dad took us to Indianapolis 500 and then we sept in the car and turned around and drove home right after the race. Whenever we hear your dads name we smile.

What a ball of energy Elgin was. Every day for him was full of fun. ( and sometimes drama, LOL). He enjoyed the simple things in life and was eager to share experiences with everyone. We should all take a lesson from Elgin. To find the good in everyday and everyone we meet. Rest in peace Elgin.

I will always remember Uncle Elgin's mischievous laugh and the sparkle in his eyes. He always reminded me of a thinner somewhat more anxious version of my father Walter Cowan, who passed in 2012.
Some of my fondest memories of Uncle Elgin involve sitting around the farm dinner table playing Euchre. It was always a matter of some difficulty to say if it was better to play with Elgin or against him.
Elgin and the entire Cowan clan always welcomed us Westerners to the family farm when we had the opportunity to travel there from Winnipeg in the summer.. He taught us how to drive the tractors and how to stack bales of hay behind the baler and to get them up into that hot loft in the barn. I remember also that when we gathered eggs or did some chores for him such as feeding the cows he always gave us some pocket money to buy some candy in Thamesville or Chatham.
On one occasion I was up in the silo with my brother Craig and we got out of rhythm pitch forking cattle feed down into the silage room. The pitchfork went nearly through my left hand. After climbing down with my brother Craig and running to the farmhouse I saw Elgin and he comforted me and quickly got me in the car to take me to the nearest hospital.
I also recall going to the horse races with him to watch Cowan's Boy or Cowan's Girl speeding around the track. I'm not always sure Elgin bet on his own horses. :)
I'll always remember Elgin's comment that cold water was poison, which he was fond of reminding us of on the scorching days of July and August.
My condolences to all my cousins in the East. Your great grandfather, grandfather, father and friend will be sorely missed. I can hear his laughter echoing, and memories of that laughter shall always warm my heart.
Goodbye Elgin...
Sincerely,
Timothy K Cowan
