Obituary of Elgin Cowan

After a well lived life and one day shy of his 96th birthday, Wm. Elgin Cowan, a resident of Chatham, formerly of Turin, passed away with family by his side on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Riverview Gardens, Chatham. Dad was born in London, Ontario, to the late Wm. Cecil and Mary (Tinline) Cowan. Beloved husband of the late Rhoda Marilyn (Leeson) Cowan. Special friend of Madeleine Montgomery. Loving father and father-in-law of Judy Dawson (Joe), Brenda Stover (Jack), Nancy Snobelen (Dan) and Merril (the late Russell Cowan). Cherished grandpa of Matthew Dawson (Tressa Galbraith), Heather Carnahan (Sean), Sarah Hill (Chris), Ann Stover (Jonathan Mercer), John Stover (Shelby), Holly Janakirama (Preetam), Jade Bayer (Daniel), Hayley Esterbauer (Mike), Avery Cowan (Derek DeBrouwer) and Hayden Cowan. Special grandpa of Maria Kraft (David) and Carla Hickmott. Proud great grandpa of Landon, Ethan, Natalie, Owen, Riley, Easton, Nicole, Zoey, Phoebe, Sadie, Siddharth, Bram, Lily, Ash, Aurora. Dear brother of Mary Doreen Jackson (Morley) and predeceased by Russell, Arthur and Walter (survived by June Cowan). Brother-in-law of Ann (late Thomas) Leeson, Louise (late Wallace) Leeson and predeceased by in-laws Dudley and Mary (Greenwood) Leeson, and sister-in-law Verlie Leeson. Loved by many nieces, nephews and friends. 

Elgin farmed the family farm from the age of 13 years old, purchasing a few of his own, planting a variety of crops and caring for numerous livestock. He was a hard worker, a good neighbour and a very active man who loved to socialize and have fun. He enjoyed dancing, cards, bowling, darts, softball, curling and horse racing. Family will receive friends at the John C. Badder Funeral Home, 72 Victoria St., Thamesville, on Thursday Feb. 1, 2024 from 6:00-8:00 PM and 1:30 – 2:30 PM on Feb. 2, 2024. The funeral service will be held from the funeral home on Friday, February 2, 2024 at 2:30 PM. Interment in Mayhew-Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Thamesville. If desired, donations may be made in memory of Elgin to Turin United Church, The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 642, Chatham or a charity of your choice.
