Obituary of Ewart Christopher Godfrey

On Monday March 10, 2025,  Ewart Godfrey broke free from the shackles of ALS and gracefully strolled through the heavenly gates, a fitting end to a well lived Christian life.  Ewart’s life started with humble beginnings in the village of Rutherford, where he pumped gas and stocked shelves at the Godfrey General Store with his mother, Doris, and father, Edgar.  He joined his older brother Richard and younger brother, Todd, joined the family several years later.

After attending a single room school in the village, he went to LKCS where his love of learning was sparked.  The following year, Ewart attended Teachers College and began a 50 year teaching  career in 1969.  Mr. Godfrey taught at St. Michaels in Turnerville from 1969 until 1987, then on to Wallaceburg’s Holy Family until 2001 and finally as the wise, veteran substitute teacher until 2021.  Hundreds of students, spanning multiple generations in Kent and Lambton counties, had the privilege to be taught by the no nonsense Mr. Godfrey.

Ewart was a family man and relished spending time with his children and grandchildren.  His sons Chris (Jennifer with Nolan, Quinn & Grace), Ryan (Erin with Evelyn & Callum) and Matthew (Nicole with Rosalind) spent their childhoods crisscrossing the country for hockey, baseball and football games, loving every minute they got to spend with their Dad.  Even a 12 hour drive to Quebec City would not deter him from supporting his sons.  Ewart loved coaching youth sports and was a dedicated coach and volunteer for over four decades in Dresden Minor Hockey and Baseball.

Ewart was a man of great Christian faith and lived those Christian values everyday with his devoted wife, Linda, of 23 years.  His family grew with his marriage to Linda; Victor (Late Krista with Caleb & Tate), Aleisha (Aaron with Alivia & Aviana) and Terry Anne were welcomed with loving arms.  Ewart and Linda worshipped in the Dresden Community Church and Ewart will be greatly missed by the  congregation. Dear brother-in-law to Dan (Gerri), Bonnie (John), Charlie (Late Nancy), and Jane.

Ewart, with Linda’s unwavering support, persevered with a calm, dignified grace right to the very end.  His positive outlook, sense of humour, and wisdom will be greatly missed by many friends, former colleagues and family.  Ewart’s family would like to thank all of his care providers, Windsor Essex ALS, The Godfrey Family will receive friends at the Badder Funeral Home & Reception Centre, 679 North St., Dresden on Thursday from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM.The Funeral Service will be held at the Dresden Community Church,29043 Community Rd, Dresden on Friday, March 14, 2025 at 11:00 AM. Private Family Interment Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wyoming.
